SPCAA in line for $37,000 from county commission

Grant

Commissioner’s wife is executive director of SPCAA

Youth sports and activities grants to various youth sports/activities organizations have been awarded by the Platte County Commission, using revenue from the county’s half cent sales tax for parks and recreation.

The largest award scheduled to be approved by county commissioners is for the Southern Platte County Athletic Association (SPCAA), where Stephanie Schieber, the wife of Platte County Presiding Commissioner Ron Schieber, is employed as the executive director.

Ron Schieber was set to abstain on the vote for the SPCAA grant at Tuesday’s commission meeting, which would still allow the approval to pass 2-0 with second district commissioner John Elliott and first district commissioner Dagmar Wood in favor.

But Wood had an unexpected absence come up and didn’t attend Monday’s commission meeting, therefore there were not enough commissioners present to approve the award if Schieber abstained.

Schiber said the SPCAA’s award would be tabled and would be placed on the agenda at a future meeting, likely at the next session.

At an April 6 commission meeting, Schieber did not abstain and voted yes on a $20,000 outreach grant to SPCAA for softball field upgrades. His wife’s signature is among the signatures on the organization’s application for funds.
