The Platte County Landmark newspaper has upgraded its digital presence in a profound way.
The Landmark is unveiling a new web site at www.plattecountylandmark.com, in what will be a dynamic news and information source for Platte County, Kansas City’s Northland and beyond.
The new site will allow The Landmark to take its award-winning brand of accountability journalism and unafraid commentary to a wider audience.
“With the pandemic, the public has been hungrier than ever for real news and commentary. While continuing to crank out the COVID-19 news affecting the region, we felt now was the perfect time to be working to enhance our product in a big way. The new dynamic web site allows us to continue to improve upon the news service The Landmark has been providing for 156 years,” said Ivan Foley, owner/publisher of The Landmark.
The new Landmark web site already hosts more than 1,200 news stories.
“Our site has been consistently ranked in the top spots since its soft launch a couple of weeks ago,” Foley said. “And our editorials and columns are surpassing the Kansas City Star in top results in regard to any ‘Platte County’ specific news searches.”
Foley pointed out that “this level of heavy web traffic will provide our online advertisers broad reach to all who engage in our digital platform.”
The new web site is hosting on Google Cloud, which allows plattecountylandmark.com to scale its performance up and down based on demand.
The new digital edition at plattecountylandmark.com replaces the former site that was put in place nearly 20 years ago. Over the next few months, the newspaper staff will be transferring many of the 3,400 news stories dating back to 2001 from the old site onto the new platform, so that legacy content will be preserved.
VIDEO WILL PLAY A LARGE ROLE
Breaking news and video will play a large role in The Landmark’s new web site. The new site is fully integrated with Facebook and will simulcast the live broadcasts of Landmark Live directly on plattecountylandmark.com.
In addition to Landmark Live, anytime the newspaper goes live with video from any meeting or community event, the video will stream live at plattecountylandmark.com.
Another convenient feature is that all the previous episodes of Landmark Live, the newspaper’s videocast that began in 2017, can now be found archived at plattecountylandmark.com for easy viewing.
“The site provides a great user experience and easy access to local news, our opinion pieces, Landmark Live, Looking Backward, photos and much more,” Foley said.
Not everything that’s in the print edition will make it to the web and not everything that is featured on the web site will make it into the print edition, providing consumers with a unique experience on each platform.
