A winner in five-state photo competition

A Platte Countian is a winner in the 36th Annual Five State Photography Exhibition.
Bill Hankins of northern Platte County, a retired journalism instructor who for years was a free lance photographer for The Landmark and whose career work landed him in the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame, earned some prize money and had two photographs chosen by the judge for the exhibition.
His photo–Platte County, Foxtail and Dew–was selected for a $100 prize and another of his photos–Cape Cod, Back to Nature, Cobb Hill Cemetery–was also chosen for the exhibition.
There are three categories in the exhibition: nature, people and open. Each category had one overall winner and three essentially second place winners. The overall winning photographer in each category received $200, while the next three received $100.
Overall there were 12 winning photographs out of the approximately 150 photos selected for the exhibition. Fourteen photos were selected as honorable mention with no monetary prize.
The competition received over 320 entries from the five state area of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Colorado.
The competition and exhibition is sponsored by the Hays Arts Council in Hays, Kan.
Bill and his son, Andy, attended the opening of the exhibition in Hays on Dec. 6.
“This is a wonderful photographic competition and has been going for nearly four decades. I was pleased to have selected for the exhibition one of my Platte County images since one of my favorite subjects is my home county. You don’t have to travel too far or wide to find beauty in this world. We have our fair share right here,” Bill said.
