From worm-eating warblers to indigo bunting, more than 117 species of birds have been recorded inside the vast stretches of forest at Weston Bend State Park. Families are encouraged to spot some on their own and discover more about the migration of birds.

Dedicated bird-watchers will also offer advice about how to locate your favorite bird.

Wings Over Weston has become the largest birding festival in two states.

“Today more than ever, children really need to explore the great outdoors,” said Christine Kline, co-chair of Wings Over Weston and vice president of Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City. “They are spending more time indoors on electronics. This event gets children outside to enjoy all that’s there.”

Visitors can also experience the spectacular forest. There are eight walking trails inside the park that vary in scenery and difficulty. Weston Bluff Trail, stretching 3.25 miles, or North Ridge Trail offer views of the Missouri River and are among the most popular trails in the park.

Weston Bend State Park is located nine miles northwest of Platte City off of Hwy. 45. Bee Creek Shelter is located about 1/8th of a mile south of the main entrance.
