A project that will add a significant stretch of sidewalk along Highway 92 in Platte City is at the bid award stage.
The sidewalk will be constructed along Hwy. 92 from the Platte County R-3 School complex to the intersection of Hampton/Marshall, which is the intersection near the post office.
Platte City’s Board of Aldermen, at a meeting occurring after The Landmark hit the streets on Tuesday this week, is expected to award the bid for construction of the sidewalk to Julius Kaaz Construction.
Kaaz Construction’s bid came in at $117,775.74 for phase one, and $121,959.37 for phase two, at a total cost of $239,735.11.
This is considerably lower than the dollar amounts the city had allocated for the project, which was more than $420,000.
The city is receiving significant financial help on the major sidewalk project.
D.J. Gehrt, city administrator, told The Landmark on Monday that grant monies will cover about $178,000 of the project, with city funds covering the remaining $61,000.
In a report to aldermen, Gehrt said the city received grant monies from the Federal Highway Commission’s Safe Routes School Initiative for phase one and MoDOT Cost Share funds for phase two.
Gehrt said construction is expected to begin in early to mid-June.
“The contract allows 120 days to complete, although the contractor plans to complete it much sooner, weather permitting,” Gehrt remarked Monday.
Phase one work in front of the school is planned to be completed by mid-August, in advance of the beginning of fall classes, Gehrt indicated.
Phase two consists of the area from Bello Mondo to Hampton, he said.
