A Weston police officer has been arrested and charged with selling a controlled substance near a school.
Kyle Zumbrunn, 26, was arrested Sept. 22 in Atchison, Kan. for allegedly selling prescription drugs oxycodone and morphine within 1,000 feet of a school.
According to court documents reviewed by The Landmark, Zumbrunn also faces charges of unlawful use of communication facilities to arrange the drug transaction and is charged with possession of a controlled substance without the proper drug tax stamps.
Kansas law requires drug dealers to purchase tax stamps for narcotics.
Zumbrunn was released Sept. 24 on a $40,000 bond. According to court records, Zumbrunn’s parents used property located in Atchison for collateral. Zumbrunn is due back in court on Friday at 9 a.m.
According to multiple media reports, Zumbrunn allegedly obtained the prescription drugs from the evidence room of the Weston Police Department.
Weston Police Chief Terry Blanton has not returned messages left by The Landmark at his office nor has the Atchison Police Department returned a call left on Tuesday.
A statement released by the City of Weston says:
“The City of Weston and the Weston Police Department are cooperating with other law enforcement agencies in the investigation of Weston Police Officer Kyle Zumbrunn.
“Mr. Zumbrunn was hired by the City of Weston on June 15, 2006 as a full time police officer. His status remains active but is under review. He is not currently scheduled to work any shifts for the City of Weston.”
The Atchison County Prosecutor’s office declined to release any information about the case.
Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said no information has been presented to his office and no charges have been filed in Missouri.
