Platte County’s public works department is seeking bids to do routine maintenance on about 30 asphalt and chip-seal roads in the county.

According to Greg Sager, director of public works, the maintenance work is similar to last year’s projects and frees up the public works crews to work on gravel road projects during the summer.

Approximately 30 miles in the county will have work included in the project.

Sager said the work will only be touching up roads already surfaced and no new roads will be surfaced with asphalt or chip and seal. According to Sager, a number of roads in the county were damaged because of weather problems during the past winter.

The projects are expected to be completed by the end of August.

The Platte County Commission awarded the bid by Linaweaver Construction to develop Benner Park near the West Platte High School in Weston. The bid for $826,760 includes doing grading work on the site and installing storm drains and making the site ready to be developed.

The county also approved an addendum to the contract for acquiring land near English Landing Park. The addendum includes a more accurate survey of the property, which includes 131.2 acres of land to the west of English Landing Park.

The land can be developed into the Missouri Riverfront Trail project and may also include ball fields and a natural preserve area.

The Platte County Visitor’s Bureau is asking for volunteers to help with the National Association of Counties convention, which will be held in Kansas City on July 11 and 12. Cheryl Thorp, executive director of the visitor’s bureau, said they are expecting about 1,500 people to arrive at KCI for the convention and need volunteers to work shifts at a table in KCI.

Volunteers will provide information, hand out water and welcome bags, and direct visitors to transportation downtown. Thorp said she expects to need about 80 volunteers over the two days and already has about 35.

Anyone interested in helping is asked to call 816-270-3979 or email Cheryl at cthorp@co.platte.mo.us.
