The Platte County Commission on Thursday approved a real estate contract for the Platte County Parks Department with Brian and Wanda Kringle.
The contract will allow the parks department to extend the Missouri Riverfront Trail west of Parkville’s English Landing Park.
According to Brian Nowotny, parks director, the department will acquire around 128 acres of land to use for the trail.
The property is located directly west of the English Landing Park and it will cost the county $1.25 million to acquire the land.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Nowotny. “We will be able to extend the Riverfront trail, but there may be other opportunities in the future.”
Nowotny said the county will work with Parkville and may add more ball fields on the land.
The commission also approved a property use agreement which will allow the Kringles to maintain the property through 2009. Nowotny said the parks department would not be able to begin work on the property until 2009.
The commission also approved a service agreement with Peter C. Sturner and Associates for the Platte County Sheriff’s Department. The agreement will allow the updating of the department’s standards for applying for the State Emergency Management Association (SEMA) grants.
According to Frank Hunter, sheriff’s department spokesman, the $13,000 cost is within the department’s budget for 2008.
