Park board short on members in Platte City

The Platte City Parks and Recreation Board on Monday had to postpone its meeting because the board could not get a quorum of members.

The meeting was postponed until Monday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. According to John Kurtz, board president, the agenda is not supposed to change.

On the agenda the board will discuss proposed swimming pool programs and the July 4 celebration plans. There will also be an update on the Verizon proposal to place a cell phone tower in Herrel Ferrel Park.

The board currently has six active members with three vacant seats that have not been filled. Platte City Mayor Frank Offutt said the city is in the process of appointing more people to various boards.

“I have asked the people on the board to continue serving,” said Offutt. “Two members had expiring terms on the board and they have agreed to accept another term.”

According to Platte City’s website, there is one opening on the Planning and Zoning Commission, which normally has nine members. There is one opening on the Board of Zoning Adjustments, which consists of five members. The Parks and Recreation Board has three openings.

“It is always challenging to find people,” said Offutt. “We certainly appreciate the people who have chosen to serve on a board. We are starting to fill in those holes and address the turnover issues.”

Anyone wanting to serve on a board in Platte City should call City Hall at 816-858-3046.
