Verbal confirmation that the Hog Owner’s Group (HOG) will be in Platte City for a street dance/festival on Main Street was received late last week.
Platte City Mayor Dave Brooks said Thursday that he had received verbal confirmation from Richard Hamstead, HOG coordinator, that the group would be in Platte City for an End of the Trail party on Sept. 6.
Brooks added that he is still awaiting written confirmation.
“We are supposed to get something in writing from them, but I am assuming that since it was a long weekend, it will be awhile,” Brooks said.
Hundreds of HOG members are planning a state-wide rally and will be in the Platte City area Sept 5-7. The riders are expected to be headquartered at the KCI Embassy Suites for the weekend.
A parade has been planned in Platte City for the group. They are expected to set up at the Platte County R-3 High School from 4-6 p.m. and tentative plans call for the group to parade on their motorcycles to Main Street around 7 p.m. Definite times for activities will be announced later. At a special meeting last week, Platte City Board of Aldermen voted to set aside $5,000 in taxpayer money for the End of the Trail Party.
A portion of that money will go toward hiring a band. Brooks said this week that he had hired The Stingrays.
“The band has been hired. That was one of our major problems—all bands in this area that are any good were booked,” Brooks said. He added that the five-person band has played together for 18-19 years.
Brooks said the formation of committees and some basic planning work will get underway this week. The mayor has said he is hopeful that Main Street merchants will help offset the cost of the event by donating funds.
Estimated costs include about $1,600 for the band; more than $1,000 for overtime for police officers to provide security; and $800 to $1,000 for portable toilets. There will also be other miscellaneous costs, including clean-up.
