County lists recipients of outreach grant money

Sixteen local agencies were awarded 2003 Outreach Grants Thursday during the Platte County Commissioners meeting.

The following organizations were awarded grants for park and recreational facility and program projects:

  • Friends of Amity Woods Nature Park, trailhead, $39,755.70.
  • Camden Point Athletic Association, park improvements, $7,360.
  • Clay-Platte Baseball, Inc., shelter house, $7,000.
  • City of Edgerton, concession/restroom, $8,885.
  • Northland Symphony Orchestra, free concert, $1,500.
  • Park Hill School District, playground, $39,371.20.
  • City of Parkville, playground, $21,311.
  • Park University, soccer field, $25,000.
  • Platte City Park Board, historic park phase 1 of pocket park on Main Street, $11,120.
  • PC Board of Services, recreation equipment, $446.
  • Platte County R-3 School District, batting cages, $3,750.
  • Southern PC Athletic Association, shelter house, $11,100.
  • Southern PC Athletic Association, bleachers, $5,120.
  • City of Weatherby Lake, playground, $15,910.
  • Weston Park Board, playground, $5,366.
  • Weston Sports Association, bleachers, $8,000.

According to Brian Nowotny, director of Platte County Parks and Recreation, there were 24 applicants for the grants.

A total of $210,994.90 in grant money was awarded.

“There was no lack of quality in the projects,” Nowotny said.

Nowotny added that double the amount of grant money was given this year as compared to previous years.

“It seems like a lot of needs are being met with this,” Presiding Commissioner Betty Knight said.

The grants are awarded using money from the county’s half cent sales tax for parks.

Commissioners also approved a contract for the Platte County Sheriff’s Department to offer animal control services to the City of Dearborn.

An agreement was also made appointing UMB Bank as paying agent and bond registrar for Platte County Missouri Neighborhood Improvement District, also known as the Parkville Commons Project.

Several bids were awarded for county offices during Thursday’s session.

A bid was awarded for four wheel drive vehicles for Planning and Zoning. The bid was awarded to Roberts Auto Plaza for a four wheel drive Chevrolet Blazer.

A bid was awarded to GW Van Keppel, Kansas City, Kan., for a motor grader for the Public Works department.

According to Dale Thomas, the bid was not the lowest bid, but it was the best bid. Total bid price, including a five year warranty was $88,325.

American Equipment Company, Kansas City, Kan., was awarded a bid for dump trucks and related equipment. The request was made by public works.

County commissioners also signed an agreement with the Navy for loan of the USS Platte bell featured in a recent article in The Landmark.

According to Cheryl Thorp, Convention and Tourism director, arrangements are being made to house the bell Platte County recently required from the USS Platte.

Thorp also said there are a few crew members who are planning on being on hand for the dedication of the bell.
