The location for the Platte City’s Farmers’ Market, an every Saturday morning event that has been growing in participation since its inception earlier this summer, will be moved effective Sept. 7.
Beginning Saturday, Sept. 7 the market will be held in downtown Platte City on the courthouse square. Previously the event has been held in front of the Paxton School along Hwy. 92.
Mary Ann Brooks, co-chair of the Platte City Area Development Association (PCADA) that sponsors the Farmers’ Market, said there have been 20 different vendors take part thus far, with an average of 10 vendors each Saturday. The maximum number of vendors has been 17 on Aug. 10.
Eleven vendors have paid to be participants for the entire season, she said, adding the association has deposited $405 from market fees thus far.
Sept. 7 is also the day the local Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a community-wide garage sale. Downtown merchants are encouraged to participate, and at a luncheon meeting on Monday at the Pizza Shoppe, the PCADA voted to place an ad in the Chamber’s flyer to promote the farmers’ market. The flyer will contain maps of garage sale locations.
In other business, the PCADA discussed the possibility of having signs posted along Hwy. 92 that would point the way to the downtown business district. The city will investigate what the costs might be and the association will discuss the matter further at its Sept. 30 meeting.
Cathy Dickerson, a teacher at Platte County R-3 High School, has 11-12 business students interested in working with the PCADA on the Farmers Market. They are “career path” students. The group is interested in teaming up with members to produce a flyer or physically work in connection with the market.
It was decided the PCADA will communicate with the teacher to see how the students can help.
