Platte County Commissioners are preparing to purchase a 40,000 square foot office building to house various governmental agencies.
Steve Wegner, second district county commissioner, on Tuesday said the county has plans to buy the building that formerly housed the National Federation of State High School Association.
The building, located along I-29 near KCI, has been for sale for several years, since the time the Federation moved its headquarters to Indianapolis.
Wegner said the county will pay $1.35 million for the building, and has plans to use another $600,000 to renovate the interior.
“We’ll hire a space consultant to come up with the interior design,” he said.
Agencies that may take up residence in the structure include the Platte County EDC, University Extension, Platte County Senior Services, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau, among others.
Wegner says there will also be space for the storage of county records.
“There will be about 14,000 to 18,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space for storage and a records center for the county,” he explained.
He said the county intends to cover the purchase and the improvements with a $2 million bond to be paid over 10 years.
The county will also benefit from lease payments made by some of the agencies who will have space there.
Wegner said the owners of the property initially asked $2.2 million for the building, which sits on a four acre tract of land. The county assessor had it valued on the tax rolls at $1.8 million, and a purchase price of $1.35 was finally agreed upon.
