The North Platte School District has received a grant from Platte County for the purchase of cardiovascular exercise equipment, according to Superintendent Dr. Francis Moran.

Moran made the announcement at the district’s Board of Education meeting last Wednesday.

The grant of approximately $41,000 will go towards the purchase of three treadmills and three recumbent exercise bicycles to be installed in North Platte’s multi-purpose building, located near the football field at the high school in Dearborn.

In accepting the grant, North Platte agreed to keep the multi-purpose building and all its exercise equipment open to the public for 20 hours a week.

“It’s great that the county is doing this,” Moran said. “Though there will be some expense to the district due to providing the necessary supervision, it is still a good opportunity.”

It is not yet clear when the multi-purpose building will open to the community. Moran reported that work on the building is “going well.” A privacy wall has been erected and workers are now finishing the installation of lockers on the junior high side of the building.

The board also discussed different options for asphalting the area around the building. Herzog Construction Co. has submitted a “very good bid,” according to Moran, but they could not do the work until October.

“We would like to have it complete by the beginning of football season,” Moran said, “so we will continue to look for other bids.”

Moran also reported on the installation of Pella windows in the junior high building.

“They really add to the building,” he said. “It’s going so well, we might look into doing additional rooms at the intermediate school in the future.”

In other business, the board had its first reading of policy revisions and a discussion of goals for 2002-2003. These, as well as a levy hearing, will be on the agenda for the Aug. 21 meeting.
