Dr. Richard Calvert is given the oath of office as Platte County coroner by Natholea Dover, deputy county clerk, as Roland Giffee, county collector and formerly coroner for 28 years, witnesses the event. Due to a mixup, Calvert\u2019s official papers were first sent to a man in Springfield and the swearing-in finally took place at 10:35 a.m., the same day the new governor, Kit Bond, was sworn in at noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mrs. Lois DeHerrera, switchboard operator at the Platte County Courthouse in Platte City, shows a plaque made for her by Joel Bryan, county building superintendent. The plaque contains a lock, some walnut and some nails from the old William Paxton cabin. Mrs. DeHerrera, whose maiden name was Boydston, was born in the cabin. The historic cabin once served as a home for slaves and was torn down in 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
