This collection of guns that has been taking up space in the property room at the Platte City Police Department is likely to soon be destroyed. The guns, collected over a period of more than 10 years, have been confiscated by the local police at various times. Most were taken from felons who were illegally in possession of a weapon, some others were from drug cases, reports Officer Alan Lowry. There are 19 long guns and 13 handguns soon to be headed for the blast furnace at a Kansas City steel plant. Platte City Police Chief Ron Canaday said the city must petition Platte County Circuit Court to get permission to destroy the weapons, but he said he doesn’t anticipate any problems in doing so.
Dave Brooks, challenger to incumbent Platte City Mayor Pearl Brown in the April election, this week outlined some of the plans he says he would bring to City Hall if elected. “I don’t think the city has been a good enough listener. I don’t think we’ve listened to the business community,” said Brooks, who is director of the brokerage division for The New England Financial Services. He said if elected mayor he will seek to form a “business people committee” to offer suggestions to City Hall.
Platte County has signed exclusive rights options to purchase three pieces of real estate that would be used to make room for the proposed new jail and law enforcement center.
