An alert mail call jailer foiled an escape attempt from the Platte County Jail and three inmates have been charged as a result. Major Greg Crader of the Platte County Sheriff’s Department said a jailer handling mail call last Wednesday felt a hard object inside a magazine. Crader said a closer look revealed two jigsaw blades. The jail was immediately locked down and a search was begun. Authorities found two more of the blades–well used–already inside the jail and found where a metal box welded around a window had been tampered with.
Christina A. Harvey, 20, of Dearborn, has been charged in connection with a Jan. 11 break-in at the KCL Express convenience store, located at the Camden Point exit off I-29. Harvey’s preliminary hearing has been set for Feb. 20 in Division II of the Platte County Circuit Court. She has posted bond of $10,000. Prosecutors allege Harvey took two cash drawers containing about $300 from the KCL Express office. Entry had been gained by breaking out a window.
Record low temperatures hit this area last Thursday through Saturday. This picture of the Wells Bank thermometer in downtown Platte City shows the temperature at nine below zero at about 10 a.m. Friday. Saturday morning’s low at KCI was 14 below zero, setting a record for that date. It was still shy of the all time low temperature ever recorded at KCI, which was 23 below zero back in 1989.
