Foley food advice.

Buffalo Wild Wings ain’t it. It’s not even close to what it used to be. For good wings you need to go to The Peanut near I-29 and 64th St. or Al’s Bar and Grill in Parkville.

More Foley food stuff.

Here’s a hidden gem we just discovered the afternoon of New Year’s Eve. You need to check this out if you’re into thin pizza, crispy crust, large flavorful slices in a unique and low-key atmosphere. Affordable pricing, as well. The place is called Northeast Pizza. Address is 2203 Lexington Ave., Kansas City, Mo. 64124.

Didn’t just like it, we loved it. Historic building. It’s not spacious, it’s tight and cozy, so be prepared for that. Unique drink options. And, there were three vested up KC cops eating there at the same time we were, so relax.

We’ll be going back. There’s family talk of grabbing both some Northeast Pizza and some Al’s wings for an in-home Super Bowl Sunday treat next month. Gonna need something to distract us from the fact the Chiefs will not be a participant. Getting hungry just thinking about it.

There’s plenty of local political stuff we’ll be talking about soon but I’m more in the mood for food and whatnot this week, to be quite honest. Plenty of time to get those local political tidbits/background info out to you. Candidate filing season doesn’t begin until Feb. 24.

One of the political tidbits I think you’ll enjoy is some inside info on the way prosecutor Eric Zahnd repeatedly F bombed presiding commissioner Scott Fricker in a Dec. 22 meeting with other officeholders present. Landmark loyalists will enjoy hearing the inside skinny on that one.

Appreciate the fact the Royals are moving their outfield fence in by about 10 feet and lowering the height of the wall from 10 feet to about 8.5 feet. But I still don’t think I’ll be able to hit one out.

There was so much political talk in last week’s column we didn’t get to brag on the really big news. And you know what that is. Yes, my NFL Pay Your Mortgage picks went 2-0 this year, putting money in your pocket and pizza and ice cream in your stomach once again. Now 7-0 lifetime on these.

On the final Sunday of the regular season, the Miami Dolphins lost, which ensured we remained undefeated on these picks. We had the Dolphins under 7.5 wins, and the Dolphins finished 7-10. As widely reported (by widely I mean in this space) our other pick this year was the Rams to go over 10.5 wins, which they did several weeks ago, finishing with a 12-5 record.

Kudos to multiple Landmark readers who reached out to say they tailed us on this year’s wagers. Three of you hit me up with emails shortly after the Dolphins game went final on Jan. 4. It was a virtual celebration via email. No Uber needed.

This Pay Your Mortgage NFL futures stuff has been better than anyone could have dreamed, even better than watching a roomful of elected officials bicker over a budget, if you can believe that. How many mortgages have you paid off, how many pizzas have you purchased or ice cream cones have melted in your mouth since we started this magical run on NFL futures bets back in 2021?

Here’s your rundown. 2021: Advised you to bet your mortgage on the Raiders over their win total. Winner. 2022: Advised you to bet your mortgage on the Eagles over their win total. Winner. 2023: Advised you to take the Commanders under their projected win total. Winner. 2024: Feeling my oats, confidently gave you two. Patriots under their win total and Bears under their win total. Both winners. 2025: Really feeling my oats at this point. Advised you to take another two-pack: Rams over their win total, Dolphins under their win total. Winners.

Here’s another fun future wager that’s in play. Sorry to keep this one a secret from you Landmark readers. The only folks who have known about this one up to now are Speck and a couple family members. I don’t watch a lot of college football but do become a college football fan around playoff time. The night before the college football playoff field was to be announced, the national talking heads were pretty sure that Notre Dame would get the final invitation into the 12-team field and Miami, Fla. would be left out. I questioned this, because Miami had defeated Notre Dame head-to-head way back on Aug. 31 and I thought there’s no way the selection committee could overlook that. Could they? The oddsmakers were also of the opinion that Miami would not get an invitation into the field. So on the night before the invitations were announced, I looked on FanDuel to discover you could get Miami, Fla. to win the national championship at 75-1 odds. Obviously that’s because most folks thought they weren’t even going to get invited. So that night I put $20 on Miami, Fla. to not only get into the playoffs but to win the national title. Twenty bucks of ice cream money at 75-1 would pay me $1500 if they win the championship. It was a fun ‘gamble’ I was willing to take. The next day when the field was announced and Miami was officially in, their odds dropped all the way down to 22-1. So I had timed the bet well.

Don’t look now but Miami, Fla. won their first three playoff games by defeating Texas A&M, Ohio State and Ole Miss, so this is really getting fun. And now they play Indiana for the championship Monday night. Mind you, Miami, Fla. is a huge underdog in the game, with Indiana an 8.5 point favorite. Still. The chance for a nice payday on a measly $20 investment is there and gives me a reason to be interested in college football.

Or should I cash it out? FanDuel is offering me $320 to cash out the bet right now. What’s your advice–let it ride and continue the chance at $1500 or grab the guaranteed $320? It’s like the old TV show Let’s Make a Deal.

My inclination is to let that puppy ride. Join me in cheering for Miami, Fla. on Monday night. By join me I mean join me virtually, don’t come to my house, I like you guys but I don’t want to clean up the mess after you’re gone.

Or go ahead and cheer against Miami, we’ll still be friends.

If Miami pulls off the shocker and wins, I’ve already told Speck we’ll be meeting up at The Cove in Platte City for a Landmark night of pizza and cold beverages. We’ll make it rain. Or something.
