The Cove is expected to open by the end of this year at 524 Branch (Hwy. 92), across from the ballfields.

“The Cove opening soon! Eat-Drink-Watch” says the restaurant’s signage on the newly-renovated building along Hwy. 92.

Don MacCuish and his son Donny are the forerunners for the restaurant project, leading the vision and day-to-day operations as owners/operators of the family venture.

Don’s wife, Amy, supports with her community connections. Amy currently serves on the Platte County R-3 School Board, and they are active members of the First Baptist Church of Platte City.

Their daughter, Emma, specializes in marketing and communications, while their son Evan focuses on menu development.

“Grandson Kooper serves as our ‘mascot’ and inspiration for the kids’ menu,” says Don MacCuish.

“We intend to open by the end of 2025,” Don says.

Menu highlights will include brick oven pizza, sandwiches, burgers, salads and more.

“We’ll have a changing specialty menu on certain evenings, for example steaks or specialty chicken,” Don remarked.

There will be draft beer, beer flights, a specially selected cocktail menu, and televisions for sporting events.

Seating capacity will be about 70-80.

The owner/operators are leasing the renovated building, which in the past has housed café and pizza style restaurants, among others.

“The building owner completely renovated the electric, HVAC and new roof. We are working on the inside right now,” says MacCuish. “The concrete floor in the kitchen was poured last week.”

Next, they’ll build a bar area and start painting.

“Once the concrete sets we will lay down the flooring and should see equipment starting to fill the space. That’s when the work will begin regarding getting inspections lined up and then applying for licenses. If all goes smoothly we should be able to open as early as November, but it’s a little too early to know for sure,” he explained.

“Once we are able to get the health inspector in next month we should have a clearer idea of when we can open the doors,” Don added.

“It is going to be exciting once we are open. The building has a lot of history,” he added.

The MacCuish family has lived in Platte City for many years. Don served in the military at Fort Leavenworth while the family lived here, and all three of Don and Amy’s kids graduated from Platte County schools.

“Our motivation is simple: We love this community and want to create a place where people can gather, share meals, and feel at home. We’re not backed by a large chain or deep pockets, just a local family investing in the town that raised us,” Don said.
