BOTH ARE GRADUATES OF PLATTE COUNTY R-3

In a moment that blended duty, destiny, and deep family ties, two sailors from Platte County— Damage Controlman 1st Class (DC1) Parker Wolfe and Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class (IS2) Gary Hennessy—were reunited for the first time since joining the U.S. Navy, thousands of miles from home.

Their paths crossed unexpectedly in late July when the USS Carl Vinson, carrying IS2 Hennessy, made port at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Watching from the deck of his own, the USS Decatur, was DC1 Wolfe — ready to welcome his cousin with a grin and a wave.

“It was surreal,” Wolfe shared. “You spend years apart, not knowing when you’ll see family again, and then all of a sudden he’s pulling into your port — in uniform, serving just like you.”

Both men graduated in the same year from the Platte County R-3 School District. Although they had shared a close bond growing up, life after high school sent them on separate paths into the Navy.

Wolfe pursued damage control, mastering firefighting and shipboard safety, while Hennessy’s path led him into naval intelligence — each serving with dedication in very different capacities.

Despite being stationed on different vessels with separate missions and schedules, the timing of the Carl Vinson’s arrival gave the cousins just enough time to reconnect.

Over a few short days, they made the most of their reunion — catching up on stories from back home, sharing their experiences in the fleet, and soaking in the rare gift of familiar company in a faraway place.

“Even though it was brief, seeing Parker reminded me of why we do this,” said Hennessy. “We serve for our families, for our country, and for each other.”

The reunion was not only a personal milestone for the two sailors, but also a testament to the bonds of family that transcend time, distance, and duty.

For the Wolfe and Hennessy families back in Missouri and Florida, it was a heartwarming reminder that no matter where the Navy takes their sons, the connection between them remains unbreakable.

As the Carl Vinson set sail again and the USS Decatur remained at port, the cousins parted ways once more — proud of their service, grateful for their time together, and hopeful their next reunion won’t be quite so far away.
