Following a small blast that startled onlookers and sent play money flying, Platte City Police Det. Al DeValkenaere with Police Chief Carl Mitchell hold up a tattered game board that was recovered after a bomb squad robot used a water shot to explode a suspicious package found outside Wells Bank. DeValkenaere later explained that a water shot is a small explosive charge similar to a blank shotgun round. Mitchell said the box had some suspicious words on the front.
North Platte School District students who want to play sports this year will have to do more than keep their grades up and pass a physical, they will have to submit to a drug test. Citing the safety , health and well-being of the students as its reason, the North Platte R-1 School Board recently approved a new mandated drug testing policy which will require anyone wishing to drive to school or participate in extracurricular activities to submit to a urine screening.
A 5K run set for Oct. 10 to benefit the Platte County R-3 Education Foundation has been approved by the Platte City Board of aldermen, but the vote was not unanimous. At an aldermen meeting Tuesday night, city officials discussed a few issues surrounding approval of the special event permit for the 5K run, which Steve Fisher, chiropractor, submitted on behalf of the school district’s education fund. In the end, only alderman Tony Paolillo voted no.
