Emily Hartung-Gilbirds, a Platte County resident and 2013 graduate of Platte County High School, had a copy of The Landmark on her journey to Antarctica. “Traveling to this faraway land had been at the top of my bucket list for years and I finally made it happen. Our cruise departed from Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina. The infamous Drake Passage lived up to its reputation, at times rocking our ship with 30-foot waves. But once we arrived at the Antarctic Peninsula, the real adventure began. Over the course of a week, we enjoyed 10 unforgettable excursions. We hiked on glaciers, kayaked among whales, snapped photos with penguins, camped under the Midnight Sun, and even took a quick dip into the icy Antarctic waters during the Polar Plunge,” Emily said. Emily is an experienced traveler who logs her adventures. “I’ve visited 50 countries and been traveling full-time for almost a year, but going to Antarctica is truly the best thing I’ve ever done. My next big goal, which I hope to achieve in the next decade, is to visit every country in the world,” she said.
