AMC Barrywoods 24 movie theater complex on Barry Road in Platte County reopened last week for the first time after being shut down months ago at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. AMC celebrated its 100th year by reopening theaters across the nation on Thursday, Aug. 20 by offering tickets priced at 15 cents apiece–their cost in 1920. The 15 cent price was good for just the one day. How quickly movie-goers will be ready to head back to the movie theaters remains to be seen. A decent number of vehicles were spotted in the parking lot when this photo was taken early Saturday evening, Aug. 22. Some of the films being shown at the Barrywoods location this week include some old releases like Ghostbusters, Grease, and Back to the Future, as well as newer films such as Unhinged, Words on Bathroom Walls and Cut Throat City. The reopening is the first step in AMC’s phased plan for its locations in the United States. It aims to have 600 theaters, or two-thirds of its operations, open by Sept. 3 in time for the launch of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which has been repeatedly delayed due to COVID-19. The rest of the AMC theaters will reopen when state and local officials give the go-ahead, company officials say.
