A fundraiser to benefit 18-year-old kidney transplant recipient Blake Conner will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 11 at Platte County Community Center North, 3101 Running Horse Road, Platte City.

The free event will feature 30-minute free classes, including body pump, cardio dance and cycle, a bounce house for children ages ten and younger, a family-friendly obstacle course for all ages, a silent auction featuring gifts valued at at least $75, and burritos by Scott’s Kitchen. A total of $2 from the sale of each burrito (costs range from $7 to $8), will be donated to the cause, said Kassie Fetterman, of Platte City, who, with the help of other fitness center employees, organized the event. Scott’s Kitchen, located at 11920 Ambassador Dr., Kansas City, is owned and operated by Platte City resident Scott Umscheid.

At the request of the Conner family, a portion of the night’s proceeds also will benefit the National Kidney Foundation and Gift of Life, an organ donation group, said Fetterman, who added that donations to the causes also will be accepted at the event.

Silent auction items include many donations by Platte County businesses and include larger ticket items such as tickets to a Kansas City Royals tickets with dugout box seats, tickets to a Sporting Kansas City soccer game and many gift baskets and collections containing multiple items.

Raffle item winners will be announced about 7:30 p.m. but winners also can be contacted if unable to attend the entire event, Fetterman said.

Organizers have set no fundraising goals but are hoping for a large turnout to raise as much money for the family and donation organizations as possible.

For more information, visit the group’s Facebook page.

The event also is intended to raise awareness of the need for kidney and other organ donations and representatives from the National Kidney Foundation will be there to provide information and answer questions.

Fetterman said, “Whatever we do, it’s a good opportunity to educate people.”
