A train and car collided on Saturday just south of Farley along 45 Hwy.
The accident happened around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday near the intersection of 45 Hwy. and Baker Road. According to the Platte County Sheriff’s Department, a Hyundai Santa Fe was stopped too close to the train tracks and the train engine hooked the bumper, dragging the vehicle along and rolling it several times.
The driver of the vehicle, Mark Jelavich, 50, of Maryville, was being transported to North Kansas City Hospital by MAST when they were diverted to Liberty Hospital. From there Jelavich was life flighted to KU Med Center with severe internal injuries.
The sheriff’s department said there were two people on the train and after the train stopped, they saw the driver walking down the tracks.
The crossing has signs, but no lights or drop down barricades.
