Editor:
The article “Voter-Approved Homestead Property Tax Credit” published in The Landmark on Oct. 7 clearly explains that eligible property owners in Platte County qualify for a credit on their 2026 property taxes. Approximately 20,000 homeowners stand to benefit.
The difficulty arises from Sheila Palmer’s stated justification for postponing the credit until the following year: delays in updating software. Eligible residents who are entitled to this tax relief should not be required to forgo the savings for which they qualify.
Platte County voters approved the homestead property tax credit on April 7 of this year. The Platte County Commission subsequently voted to implement the credit for 2026. Implementation is therefore a legal requirement, not a discretionary decision for the collector.
The will of the voters and the formal action of the commission must be respected. It should not require legal action by citizens such as Jason Maki and James Bosch to compel compliance. Officials in Platte County have a duty to remain accountable to the residents who elected the governing body that enacted this measure.
Compliance is not optional.
Respectfully,
Kay Synder
Platte County
