Going in at Platte Purchase and Hwy. 152

After reviewing the recommendation from the Facility Naming Committee, the Platte County R-3 Board of Education selected the committee’s top-ranked name submission, Platte Purchase Middle School, as the name for new school being built near Platte Purchase Drive and Highway 152.

The committee had forwarded a short list of three names from the more than 70 names submitted during the naming process. Other potential names on the short list were Platte Landing Middle School and Cardinal Point Middle School.

Benefits to the name of Platte Purchase Middle School as cited by the committee include:

Platte Purchase Middle School –

Historical and geographic significance in this specific area. The New Middle School #2 property is in Platte County near the Clay/Platte line on N. Platte Purchase Rd. The “Platte Purchase” was a land acquisition by the US government from American Indian tribes. It comprised lands along the east bank of the Missouri River and added 3,149 square miles to the northwest corner of Missouri. The formal application came in the summer of 1835 when at a meeting on the Dawes farm near Liberty, where the Indian agent for the Sac and Fox tribes, Andrew S. Hughes, presided over a meeting of Missouri residents who formally asked Congress to acquire the land. Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton introduced a bill to acquire the land and it was approved with little opposition in June 1836.

.Including “Platte” in the name helps to connect this school to the district as whole, and ties all three secondary schools together with “Platte” in the facility names.

.Provides an opportunity for teaching students about the area and history
