The Ben Ferrel Platte County Museum in Platte City will host an Ice Cream Social with old-time music to celebrate Missouri’s 200th birthday on Tuesday, Aug. 10 from 5-8 p.m.
Ice cream and cake will be served, while supplies last, from the front porch of this historic museum at 3rd and Ferrel Street in Platte City. Jim George from St. Joseph will perform old-time banjo and guitar music.
This event is part of Scoops Across Missouri 2021, which aims to celebrate the state’s bicentennial with a taste of Missouri’s official dessert. Over 80 counties statewide are participating.
“Our museum is an ideal location for this initiative,” explains Sue Hurd Van Amburg who is one of the event’s organizers. “Not only are we featuring bicentennial displays, but the architecture of the Missouri Governor’s mansion inspired our own mini mansion’s design.”
Built by Frederic Krause in 1882, this mini mansion opened as a museum in 1985. It is owned and operated by the Platte County Historical Society, which is currently displaying “Show Me 20 in 2021,” twenty artifacts highlighting Missouri’s first century of statehood in Platte County.
Sponsors of the ice cream social include Wells Bank, Cosentino’s Price Chopper in Platte City, and historical society members. This event is free to the community.
