ON SUNDAY, JUNE 7
Finding Artifacts from the Camden Point Civil War Battle of 1864.
Johnny Shultz spent years metal detecting the fields around Camden Point where a Civil War skirmish and rout occurred on July 13th, 1864.
With permission of the land owners, he followed the flight of Colonel Thornton’s men and recruits from the interrupted picnic provided by the townspeople on that fateful day.
Dropped bullets, chewed bullets, bayonets, swords, money and more were literally unearthed where the men and boys ran to escape Union troops from Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri.
On Sunday, June 7, Johnny, a former Dearborn now Platte City resident, will share his findings at a presentation of the North Platte Historical Museum. The museum will provide a free roasted pork loin meal at the Camden Point Firehouse at 5 p.m. Sunday evening. Johnny’s presentation is at 5:30 p.m. It is a continuation of the Steve Goodlet Memorial Lecture series.
The North Platte Historical Museum and Cultural Center is a 501 non-profit entity located at 210 Main Street, Dearborn, Mo. preserving the history and culture of the towns and surrounding areas of Camden Point, Dearborn, Edgerton, New Market and Ridgely.
