EDITOR:

I wanted to share a matter that we at KC Youth Athletics Sports Reporting are currently investigating, which we have copied you on, regarding potential eligibility concerns within the North Suburban Youth Football League (NSYFL).

Over the past week, we have reached out multiple times to the NSYFL Board seeking clarification on the current eligibility standards. To date, we have not received a response, despite contacting nearly all board members through several channels.

Our reporting has gathered information from multiple sources who allege that some athletes may have been “reclassified” into younger grade levels, which could provide certain organizations with a competitive advantage. In essence, “reclassifying” refers to the practice—again, as alleged by several individuals—of placing athletes who are a year or more older than their peers onto younger teams by using their school grade rather than their chronological age. If accurate, this would appear to conflict with league rules that include eligibility on age including academic grade level.

Did this practice actually occur, and if so, was it with the knowledge or tacit approval of any coaches and athletic directors? That’s what we have been trying to find out. These claims have not been confirmed, and the league has not yet responded to requests for clarification.

If these allegations prove to be true, it would raise legitimate concerns about fairness and oversight within the league. Youth sports should serve to teach values such as integrity, teamwork, and respect—not to exploit loopholes for competitive gain.

With the NSYFL Championship approaching this weekend, we believe transparency from league leadership is essential to ensure parents, players, and the community can trust that the games are being conducted on a level playing field.

We will continue to investigate these reports and intend to share a complete story once all sides have had the opportunity to respond. Our hope is that the league’s leadership will soon provide clarification to help restore confidence in the integrity of youth football in our community.
