Katie O’Brien, senior, was crowned Platte County R-3 Homecoming Queen at the Pirates’ football game with the Cameron Dragons on Saturday afternoon. Katie, pictured with her father, Mark, was chosen from a field of eight candidates. Other queen candidates included Stephanie Pender, Dana Matt, Carrie Knight, Tracey Frogge, Lisa Wade, Heidi Plaisted, and Amanda Eggen. Cameron won Saturday’s football game over the Pirates, 34-13.

Daniel Meany, two years old, had his face painted by Penny Brady of the Trail Shop during the Applefest held in Weston over the weekend. Daniel and his family came from Blue Springs to enjoy the activities of the Applefest. Brady began her career as a face painter just the day before, she said. Practically speaking, she already had experience painting designs on her own children’s faces.

Platte County R-3 School District has entered into an agreement to begin friendly condemnation proceedings to acquire 38 acres of real estate generally located behind the high school and middle school in Platte City. The land will be acquired from its current owners, the heirs of the late Francis M. Wilson. “It’s a piece of property the school district has been interested in for a long time,” said Don Siegrist, R-3 superintendent. The land was attractive to the school because of its close proximity to other school facilities, and the easy access to city sewer and water lines.
