Hot dogs, postage hikes, character references

I had never heard the term Irish golf until I looked at the proposed plans for Creekside Irish Golf at Parkville. I thought it might be played by leprechauns under a rainbow. Googled Irish Golf and still didn’t get what felt like a fitting explanation.

I don’t know if it’s standard at all ‘Irish Golf’ places but the proposed Creekside course will only utilize pitching wedges and putters.

Here’s what Google said when I entered the question: What is Irish Golf?

Google’s answer: “Irish golf encompasses the sport of golf as it is played in Ireland, characterized by its world-class courses, particularly links courses, and a strong golfing culture. Ireland is renowned for its natural links courses, with a significant portion of the world’s links courses located there. Beyond the courses themselves, Irish golf is also about the experience, the welcoming atmosphere, and the unique blend of challenging play and stunning scenery.”

That didn’t exactly clear things up but it’s more information than we had prior to employing our friend Google.

Happy to see that the hot dog eating contest by Fetterman’s is back for another year at the Platte City daytime July 4th celebration on Main Street. There’s no question it was the highlight of last year’s event.

Checking with Speck and Kamler to see they want to represent The Landmark in this year’s sausage fest. Or at least dress up as ketchup and mustard.

I just read that Bobby Sherman died this week. If you were alive in the late 60’s and early 70s and don’t know who Bobby Sherman was, ask your sister. She probably does.

Less than great news from your United States Postal Service again. This won’t surprise you: it has to do with rate increases.

Postage rates are on track to increase on July 13. First class stamps are increasing by five cents, from 73 to 78 cents apiece.

If you’re a volume user of stamps I would advise heading to the post office and buying a good amount of the 73 cent Forever stamps before the price hike takes effect. Just as the name implies, you can use those Forever stamps forever, regardless of any future price increase.

Also, as they’ve been doing to us twice a year the past few years, the USPS will hike the rate we pay to mail your weekly Landmark by 9.4 percent on July 13. For about three years now, they’ve been hitting periodical class mailers–which includes newspapers–with twice a year increases of about 10 percent each. If you’re good at math, that means the increase has been 20 percent per year for the past few years.

This will be the ninth increase in postage rates since January of 2020.

I’m sure it will result in improved service. Right?

Prima Facie Bistro in Downtown Parkville, in the former bank building at 12 E. First St., gets two thumbs up from your Between the Lines foodie. Hadn’t been there until about a week ago and now have been there twice for a meal–one lunch, one dinner–and am making plans for a third trip soon. Good menu, great service, top-notch atmosphere, classy interior. Check it out.

Character references, so to speak.

About the murder suspect in the Dennis Sharkey shooting on I-29 in January: As you read last week, the suspect’s name is Ruslan Huseynov, 34, of Kansas City in Jackson County. Also as we exclusively reported last week, Huseynov was employed at the Worlds Liquor location in Platte City.

Over the weekend, I had a customer of the liquor store tell me that he always picked up a “dark vibe” from Huseynov when he was working in the store.
Huseynov is also known to have frequented several of the area casinos.

“He was a real piece of (crap),” one casino worker in the table games area told me. “Just a jackass.” A different area casino worker said: “I’ve always thought he was a hothead.”
