Memorial Day service set Monday in Platte City

Platte City’s annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26 at the Platte City Cemetery, located at 101 North Fourth Street.

A Memorial Day tribute will be offered by speaker Lee A. Norman, senior medical director of OptumCare Midwest Region.

Norman received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota, did his residency in family medicine in Texas, and his aerospace medicine training in the U.S. Air Force at Brooks AFB in San Antonio.

Dr. Norman has served as chief medical officer for over 26 years, most recently at the University of Kansas Health System. He currently is a clinical faculty member at the KU School of Medicine. He served for three years as the Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Gov. Laura Kelly’s cabinet, additionally as the senior state health official leading the Kansas COVID-19 pandemic response.

This year attendees will see more than 450 American flags flying throughout the cemetery. Flags have been placed on graves of veterans who fought for our country.

The order of service will be as follows:

*Welcome and introduction by the Platte City Chamber of Commerce.
*Call to Colors by VFW Post 4055.
*Posting of Colors by Boy Scout Troop 1351.
*Pledge of Allegiance
*The National Anthem by Kendall Heckman.
*Invocation by Pastor Curt Vignery, Judah City Church.
*Presentation of Wreath by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
*Necrology by Mayor Steve Hoeger.
*Memorial Day Tribute by Dr. Lee Norman
*Rifle Salute and Taps by VFW Post 4055.
*America the Beautiful by Kendall Heckman.
*Benediction by Pastor Curt Vignery.
*Retire of Colors and Dismissal by Boy Scout Troop 1351 and VFW Post 4055.
