The Platte County Sheriff’s Department has released this information about today’s officer-involved on I-29 near eastbound I-435:

This morning just after 7 a.m., a deputy with the Platte County Sheriff’s Office was part of an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred on northbound Interstate 29 at eastbound Interstate 435 after a pursuit that originated in the City of Riverside.

The pursuit originated after officers from the Riverside Missouri Police Department responded to a hotel at the Argosy Casino on a reported domestic disturbance with shots fired.  The Platte County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the pursuit as the suspect vehicle traveled north from the City of Riverside onto Interstate 29.

The pursuit ended on northbound Interstate 29 at eastbound Interstate 435 when the suspect vehicle was disabled with tire deflation devices deployed by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department.  After officers on scene attempted to direct the suspect to surrender for approximately 30 minutes, the suspect stepped out of the vehicle armed with a handgun and pointed the firearm at the officers present.  Two members of the Riverside Police Department and one Platte County Deputy Sheriff fired at the male suspect, striking him.

Officers on scene began providing medical care until EMS arrived and transported the suspect to an area hospital, where he was declared deceased.  No officers were harmed at the scene.

The investigation of the officer involved shooting is being conducted by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department, and any information related to that investigation will be released by that agency.

The investigation for the original domestic assault / shooting that occurred in Riverside, Missouri, will be investigated by the Riverside Missouri Police Department, and any information related to that investigations will be released by that agency.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident today, I am grateful for the level of cooperation among the multiple law enforcement agencies involved this morning that work to protect the public.  We recognize the need for a complete and thorough independent investigation into this incident and will continue to cooperate to provide transparency.” – Erik Holland, Sheriff of Platte County
