It’s a Thanksgiving Eve tradition in Platte City.

A critical injury in crash on Hwy. 152

The 2023 Holiday Lighting Celebration in Downtown Platte City will be held Wednesday, Nov. 22, the evening before Thanksgiving.

The celebration centered on Main Street will begin at 5:30 p.m. and run until 8 p.m. It is sponsored by the Platte City Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Platte City.

The event is typically the largest community event held in Downtown Platte City each year.

This year’s theme is “A German Christmas.”

A lighting ceremony for the Platte County Courthouse and surrounding downtown buildings will kickoff the evening, with the switch being flipped at 6 p.m. followed immediately by the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The evening will also include activities such as:

•Santa and Mrs. Claus at the North Pole (former City Hall)
•Horse Drawn Carriage Rides
•Christmas Photo Booth
•Letters to Santa
•Pony Rides
•Petting Zoo
•Christmas Karaoke
•Christmas Selfie Station
•Clown with balloon animals
•Make-it-Take-it ornaments
•Reindeer Antlers
•12 foot Santa inflatable giveaway

FOOD AND
OTHER TREATS

Free hot dogs, chili and water will be served inside the Central Platte Fire Department station at Second and Main Street.

Other free offerings at the fire department will include frosted sugar cookies, popcorn, s’mores, assorted Christmas cookies, candy canes, chocolate covered pretzels, gingerbread cookies, hot apple cider, hot cocoa, and holiday treat bags.

MUSIC

According to Tricia Friddell, executive director of the Platte City Chamber of Commerce, musical offerings will include:

•5th Grade Barry Choir (performing at the courthouse steps 5:30 p.m.-6 p.m.)
•Platte County High School Choir (performing at the courthouse steps 5:30 p.m.-6 p.m.)
•Beatniks Dance (performing at the courthouse steps 5:30 p.m.-6 p.m.)
•Holiday Brass Ensemble at Third and Main 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m.
•Flute Trio at the Ben Ferrel Museum 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m.
•The Joel Gordon Trio at Barley & Vine 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m.
•Life 88.5 broadcasting live 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m.
•Christmas music playing at the courthouse steps 6-8 p.m.

PARKING AND TROLLEY RIDES
If you want to avoid any potential parking issues, there is a free trolley service offered. Trolley rides will run between the Platte County High School parking lot to Main Street every 15 minutes from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
