Six candidates jump in R-3 school board race

Platte County R-3 School Board

ONE OF THE SIX HAS DECIDED TO WITHDRAW

There is a lot of interest in the Platte County R-3 Board of Education election this year.

Filing deadline for school board candidates was Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 5 p.m., and when the smoke cleared there were six candidates who had filed for three open positions at R-3.

The seats up for grabs in the April 4 election are currently held by Sharon Sherwood, Buffy Smith and Bobby Vann.

The six people who filed as candidates are, in order of filing: Mike Claxton, Tyler Fadler, Matt Craine, Amy MacCuish, and incumbents Bobby Vann and Sharon Sherwood.

(UPDATE: On Thursday, Jan. 5, Mike Claxton told The Landmark he is pulling out of the race. He said a recent job change has influenced his decision to withdraw, saying he doesn’t feel like he can dedicate the time he feels will be necessary for a campaign/board of education service).

Smith, who has served two three-year terms, will not be seeking re-election this time around, she says.

“It has been an honor to serve for nearly six years but it is time for others while I focus on my family,” Smith told The Landmark recently.

“My hope is that the board and community will provide oversight and the leadership this district deserves,” she added.
