Week 3 – Butt Punt Flambe

Seven years ago, in Week 3 of the 2015 NFL season the start of the then St. Louis Rams game was delayed because pregame pyrotechnics set the artificial turf on fire.  That’s right, the team accidentally set the artificial turf on fire.  This was dark humor back then with some sports commentators dubbing it “Rams Flambe” and making further comparisons of the event to Martin Scorsese’s crime caper “Good Fellows.”  In Good Fellows, there’s a scenario in which the titular Fellows take control of a restaurant and bleed it dry until it “accidentally” catches fire and they collect the insurance money (or in the Rams case, pack up the vans and move to LA).

Fast forward to Week 3 of 2022 and our dark humor is the “Butt Punt.”  NFL fans got a huge thrill out of Dolphins punter Thomas Morstead kicking the ball directly into the backside of teammate Trent Sherfield during Sunday’s game against the Bills.  The “Butt Punt” was humorous to watch and ended up costing the Dolphins two points via a safety and has now become part of pop-culture’s lexicon for embarrassing performance .  Similarly, members of the Landmark staff have commented that it has been humorous to watch Foley “Butt Punt” and “Flambe” his way through the first three weeks of the 2022 pickem season.
