City extends lease on temporary police station

Until the new City Hall/police station is ready

Platte City’s police department will continue to use its current leased location as a headquarters until the new City Hall/police station is completed later this year or early next year.

City officials have approved a lease extension with the MA Thalman Trust in the amount of $1,600 per month to continue to occupy the Thalman property at 355 Main Street as the temporary police station.

The new agreement has a one year initial term with a city option for a second year. The initial term is May 1, 2022 through April 30, 2023.

The Platte City Police Department moved out of the Civic Center complex at 308 Zed Martin Street back in 2013 when structural failure of the floor supports and other environmental factors forced it to exit that end of the center.

Since that time, the city has leased the 2,100 sq. ft. building and associated rear parking area at 355 Main Street from the MA Thalman Trust. The lease has been extended four times over the past nine years, says DJ Gehrt, city administrator.

Gehrt said when the prior lease was approved in May 2019 it was planned to coincide with expected completion of the new police station/City Hall complex being built in the 200 block of Marshall Road.

The new police station/City Hall is expected to be completed in late 2022 and the police department is expected to complete the move into the new building in late 2022 or early 2023, Gehrt says.

An option for a second year on the new lease is unlikely to be needed but ensures the police department can continue its use of the Thalman building through April 2024, if necessary.

The $1,600 per month lease rate for the initial lease extension is unchanged from the current rate. The rate would increase to $1,650 per month if the city exercises its option for the second year.

NEW POLICE STATION/CITY HALL

Gehrt offered an update on the new police station/City Hall being constructed at the former Platte Medical Clinic site in the 200 block of Marshall Road.

Final building design has a total of size of 15,900 sq ft.

The main floor is 9,700 sq ft and includes, entry lobby, customer service counter, board of aldermen chamber, storm shelter, public restrooms, police administration and investigations, and city administration offices.

A walk out basement includes police squad room, locker room, evidence rooms, archive storage, fitness room and unfinished expansion space. The basement also includes all mechanical and other systems support spaces.

Gehrt said the building is designed to have enough space to grow the police force from current 12 officers to final size of 25 officers.

Administration spaces include future growth of up to four additional staff. The additional space is designed to support city police department and administrative growth over the next 40 to 50 years, Gehrt said.

“Building completion schedule has been planned for December, 2022 however there has already been enough difficulty in obtaining some materials that completion is likely to be delayed until early 2023,” Gehrt told The Landmark on Tuesday.
