In fairness, that is assuming we are not all fighting a World War III. In that case, the season may be delayed or canceled, but I’m not an expert on such matters. I’m not sure an expert exists. How good are you at Molotov cocktails?
I did not get an invite to the Patrick Mahomes bachelor party in Vegas. Probably got lost in the mail. Post office is struggling these days, I’ll overlook it in this case.
Many of your future congress representation elections are being won and lost this year in Jefferson City. Both Republicans and Democrats know that the way districts are drawn can lead to decades of control by one party or the other. The state legislature is currently debating the divisions for congressional maps and from what I can tell it is a three-way fight. Democrats, Republicans and then “Conservative Caucus Republicans.” It seems that the run of the mill Republicans have a general compromise map that they can agree on, but the conservative caucus wing of the party is not having it and they want something that fits their liking more than the compromised map put forward.
I can best summarize this battle as there are football coaches that would have their team kneel on the one-yard line at the end of a game with a six-point lead and time running out. There are other coaches that would put another touchdown on the board and relish the opportunity of winning by the larger margin. Republicans are winning this game either way, but the Conservative Caucus wants to win by more. Maybe they’re right, but I’m always a tad scared of Karma in these situations. A few swift kicks to the unmentionables in life will teach you to think that way.
People smart about this explain that this could come back and haunt the Republicans, as things change over time, and it could come back on the party as districts and parties change. (See Joe Biden’s 81 million votes as opposed to his current approval ratings); Life comes at you fast. Yesterday’s Democrats are today’s Republicans and vice versa. Some former Kamala fan is out there putting up a Trump 2024 sign somewhere; who could have guessed it?
Anyway, this vote is going to be crucial to the future of leadership in our state, yet, like most things that happen in Jefferson City, it is largely ignored by most of us.
The Missouri Senate Conservative Caucus has a Twitter account. I have not checked the lineage of the members, but at least some of them appear to be the love children of Ronald Reagan and Rush Limbaugh. They support faith, family, and freedom according to the Twitter profile and all I can gather is that they are like, better Republicans than you are. I assume it is the conservative version of the progressive wing of the Democrat party.
Anyway, I love a good pasty white Republican as much as the next straight guy, but I’m pretty average, so I’m on team “regular Republicans” currently. That can change though. If I get a case of exceptional love of family, faith, or freedom, I’m getting on the “better Republicans” train.
