Five people were injured in a chain reaction accident Monday afternoon on Interstate 29 in southern Platte County.
The wreck involved five vehicles and occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 29, just south of Waukomis Road.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the first collision happened as 24-year-old Himalkumar Bhakta of Concordia slowed the speed of his 2012 Audi due to traffic congestion and was struck by a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Joseph Keim, 26, of Shawnee, Kan.
Primarily the force of that collision caused a series of rear-end accidents. Ricky Johnson, 55, of Greenfield, Iowa, was propelled into the Audi, which forced Himalkumas into a second lane of traffic. Kim Robinson, 60, of Red Oak, Iowa, struck the Audi vehicle and her vehicle was rear-ended by Jessica Colgan, who was driving a 2018 Dodge Durango, according to preliminary reports.
Two drivers and three occupants were taken by ambulance to the North Kansas City Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Joseph Keim sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment.
A 33-year-old passenger inside the Audi was the only individual not wearing a safety device at the time of the collision, according to the crash report.
The Kansas City Missouri Police Department and the Northmoor Police Department assisted the Missouri Highway Patrol with the investigation.
