A medical malpractice and wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against an emergency room physician alleging the doctor’s negligence resulted in the death of a local woman.
Plaintiffs Eric and Adam Coomes claim their lives were forever changed when their mother, Anna Coomes of Gladstone, sought life-saving care at Saint Luke’s North Hospital on Jan. 27, 2018.
Coomes arrived at St. Luke’s North in respiratory distress, just before 5 a.m., according to court documents.
Dr. Ryan Geddes allegedly performed an emergency endotracheal intubation on Anna. After one failed attempted, Geddes allegedly made a second attempt to carry out an endotracheal intubation.
The medical procedures failed and Coomes did not survive. An autopsy report showed that the endotracheal tube was positioned within the esophagus, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit alleges the emergency room physician that the patient trusted to render medical care was careless and negligent.
Dr. Geddes “failed to recognize and correct the esophageal tube placement” and “failed to properly read x-rays,” the suit claims.
The lawsuit also claims Dr. Geddes did not exercise a level of skill typically exercised by medical professionals.
Eric and Adam Coomes are seeking more than $75,000 in damages for loss of companionship, consortium and guidance. They have obtained the legal counsel of John Norton of Norton & Norton, P.C.
