Platte County R-3 Superintendent Dr. Mark Harpst says he is very pleased with the annual performance report received by the district.
The R-3 school board reviewed the report at a meeting Tuesday night at Barry School.
According to Harpst, there are 12 standards that must be met for a school to receive its accreditation. Platte County R-3 met 11 of those criteria.
Since the report is based on a five year cycle, the district did not meet the dropout rate standard due to a low rate in 1999.
“We are real pleased,” Harpst said.
The 12 standards a school district must meet in order to obtain accreditation is M.A.P scores for grades 3-5, grade 6-8 and grades 9-11; reading scores; ACT scores; advanced courses; vocational courses; college placement; vocational placement; drop out rate; and attendance.
In other business at Tuesday’s meeting, although a deal for a partnership on a community center between Platte County R-3 and Platte County Commissioners won’t happen, discussion pertaining to the proposed use of a swimming pool at the county’s soon-to-be-built center was held.
On the heels of the recent failed partnership talks, Platte County Commissioners announced they did plan on building a center on a five acre plot on Running Horse Road.
Community center plans include construction of a pool. At the heart of the debate for the partnership was a pool.
Harpst said negotiations are in progress between the two entities concerning use of the pool for the school district. Harpst added nothing has been determined concerning a price for the school’s swim team to use the pool. Harpst expects an announcement to be made official in a month.
A building project update was given during the meeting.
Almost all construction projects for the district are wrapping up.
Board members met in executive session to discuss personnel issues.
According to Harpst, Ethel Walker was hired for the district’s before and after school program.
The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Nov. 21 at Northland Career Center. The high school Pirate Achievement Club recipients will be recognized.
