Wrestling
club treasurer charged with taking funds
The former treasurer of the Platte City Youth Wrestling
Club faces a felony charge of stealing from the not-for-profit
organization.
Debra Renee Callaway, 43, of Platte City is charged with
the Class C felony of stealing, reports Platte County
Prosecuting Attorney Tammy Glick.
Callaway was arrested on Friday and her bond was set
at $20,000. Her attorney filed a motion for a 10% bond,
which was approved by the court with no objection by the
state. Callaway then posted bond and a hearing in her
case has been set for June 4 at 9 a.m. in Platte County
Circuit Court.
Wrestling club officials apparently had noticed irregularities
in the organization's books. An investigation was conducted
by the Platte City Police Department.
According to court papers, authorities believe that from
Oct. 20, 2000 through Feb. 27, 2002 Callaway embezzled
currency and cash in the amount of $4,636.47 from the
wrestling club.
In a statement of probable cause filed with the court,
authorities allege Callaway admitted in the course of
the investigation that she took $2,000 from the club.
She told authorities that she had financial problems at
the time, according to court papers.
Glick explained that any theft of more than $750 is considered
a felony.
