Strange scene near creek
Police investigating SUV/travel trailer
7.18.18

by Ivan Foley
Landmark editor

An SUV pulling a travel trailer sits near the bank of a creek behind Kossen Body Shop in a wooded area between the body shop and Cox Park in Platte City near Second and Spring Street. Platte City police had received a report of the SUV and travel trailer in the area and are investigating.

Lt. Al Devalkenaere said the situation at this point is assumed to be that the SUV had a mechanical problem coming down a hill and ended up on the edge of the creek.

Landmark photos from the scene would seem to indicate there may be more to it than that. The awning of the travel trailer appears to be in a set position and accessories hang from the back of the travel trailer, as if they’d been hung there to dry or air out after being used.

Devalkenaere said authorities last knew the previous whereabouts of the travel trailer late Sunday or sometime on Monday.

The front wheels of the SUV are hanging off the ledge “about to go in the creek,” Devalkenaere said. Police say they know the SUV is owned by a local resident, “the same person that had the travel trailer.” But Devalkenaere declined to comment further as the investigation is ongoing.

The scene is not visible from the roadway and required a walk of about 40-50 yards. Police said they believe the land where the SUV and travel trailer are now sitting is private property.
