A semi-trailer truck struck multiple vehicles Wednesday killing a local high school football coach.

Nathan Danneman, 37, of Camden Point died when a freightliner crossed the median and collided with his 2014 Ford Focus. His daughter, three-year-old Taven Danneman, sustained minor injuries.

Danneman was the head football coach at West Platte High School in Weston. A candlelight vigil was held Thursday night at the district’s old football field. His funeral was held Monday afternoon at the school.

“He was one of our best. A beloved and respected figure,” said John Rinehart, superintendent of the West Platte R-2 School District.

Coach Danneman was pronounced dead at the scene by a Platte County Sheriff’s Department deputy at 6:54 p.m. Wednesday. His body was transported to the Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office.

His daughter,Taven was taken to Children's Mercy Medical Center, where she was treated for minor injuries.

The semi-trailer truck also struck a 2017 Ford F150, driven by Ronald Wilson, 23, of Kansas City and a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Amber Garvey, 26, of Kansas City. Wilson sustained minor injuries and was transferred to North Kansas City Hospital. Amber did not report any injuries and left the scene in her vehicle.

The multi-vehicle collision occurred at about 6:46 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 29, just south of the Camden Point exit.

According to a preliminary investigation, Carl Braddock, 63, of Geneva Neb., was headed northbound in a 2014 freightliner before he left the roadway and crossed into the southbound lanes of traffic. Braddock suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph.

The Platte County Sheriff's Office and the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office assisted the Missouri State Highway Patrol at the scene. Both lanes of southbound I-29 and one lane of northbound I-29 were shut down for several hours following the crash.

This was the 23rd fatality so far this year in a 14-county jurisdiction covered by Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A. Troop A, based out of Lee Summit, serves the following counties: Bates, Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clay, Henry, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis, Platte, Ray, and Saline.
