Up to $50,000 worth of vandalism was done inside a business under construction in Platte City one night last week.
Platte City police say the construction site of the future home of Meritas Health along Running Horse Road was vandalized late Wednesday or early Thursday. In addition, police say at least two items, including a drill and a portable stereo, were taken from the site. Those items were found a short distance away along Running Horse Road on property owned by Running
Horse Ranch and Home.
The drill was found on the Ranch and Home roof. Lt. Al Devalkenaere said the vandalism included graffiti spray painted throughout the building, a fire extinguisher being discharged into the building’s heating/cooling system, holes being put in walls (possibly with a hatchet), holes being drilled in cabinets, and the squirting of what is believed to be caulking into the blower motor of a heater.
Police said surveillance video from a nearby business appears to show two people walking away from the construction site at about 1:50 a.m. Thursday but that the video is extremely grainy. The investigation is continuing.
