More than $214,000 in fine jewelry was stolen from a jewelry store in the Zona Rosa Shopping Center early Saturday morning.
Charges have been filed against three out-of-state residents. Monta Tindall, 36, of Los Angeles, Danielle Rodell, 54, of Oakland, and Roderick Jordan, 54, of Los Angeles, are charged with committing felony theft, burglary in the second degree, and resisting arrest.
According to court records, a resident of an apartment in Zona Rosa dialed 9-1-1 shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday, when he observed one of the three suspects using what appeared to be a baseball bat to strike a glass door at Zales Jewelry Store located at 8560 N. Winter Avenue. The witness told police two other suspects were standing on the sidewalk, with one holding an item that appeared to be a baseball bat.
The witness said he watched the three people dressed in black clothing enter the store.
The same witness observed the suspects fleeing in a westward direction in a Gray Nissan SUV.
A Kansas City police officer caught up with the suspects' getaway vehicle traveling northbound on N. Congress Avenue. As the officer followed the vehicle onto NW Prairie View Road, he signaled for the motorist to pull over by activating his lights and siren of his patrol vehicle.
The motorist failed to stop and continued to flee. heading southbound on I-29, according to court records.
Police followed the vehicle as the suspects merged onto I-635 before steering onto 9 Highway toward Parkville. The driver allegedly pulled behind a building near the 500 block of East Street, where the suspects fled on foot into a wooded area on foot.
After searching the area, police say they located the three alleged suspects and recovered $214,061 in stolen jewelry.
After taking inventory of the stolen merchandise, a store employee said $2,423 worth of jewelry remains to be accounted for. The store employee told authorities the store also suffered approximately $4,000 in damages to seven jewelry cases and the glass entryway.
Court documents indicate the suspects were registered guests at the Best Western located at 2633 NE 43rd Street in Kansas City.
Police say they recovered a Ralph Lauren pillow case, matching the one they found loaded with jewelry, inside Tindall's hotel room.
Their vehicle was allegedly rented from Hertz Car Rental on Wednesday, Sept. 30 in West Hollywood. It was scheduled to be return on Oct. 5.
Platte County Circuit Court Judge Ann Hansbrough set the suspects' bond at $100,000 cash only. At this time, they remain in custody in the Platte County Jail awaiting a court hearing.
