Numerous officers and vehicles from multiple police agencies converged upon Platte City around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. Sgt. Jerin Almond of the Platte County Sheriff’s Department says three black males--one of whom is shown in this photo being placed in a patrol car by authorities--fled from the Missouri State Highway Patrol on Interstate 29. Details were sketchy at Landmark deadline Wednesday morning, but it is believed the suspects fled on foot from a vehicle that had been stopped on the interstate near Exit 19 at the northern edge of Platte City. A patron of the Travel Lodge near that location told The Landmark the suspects came running past him at the southwest corner of the lodge and headed up the hill toward the apartments behind the motel. At some point, the suspects retreated back down the hill and were found by officers near or in a trash dumpster behind the lodge. The Travel Lodge patron told The Landmark he believed the suspects were inside the dumpster. Sgt. Almond said he wasn’t sure whether the men were found inside the dumpster or just “near it.” Agencies on the scene included the Highway Patrol, Platte County Sheriff’s Department and canine unit, Platte City Police Department and Kansas City Police Department.
